In any event, this account represents the way I saw things then, in 1951-1953: the ideas, the people, and myself. Thus many of the comments may seem one-sided and unfair, but this is often the case in the incomplete and hurried way in which human beings frequently decide to like or dislike a new idea or acquaintance. Although the latter approach might be more objective, it would fail to convey the spirit of an adventure characterized both by youthful arrogance and by the belief that the truth, once found, would be simple as well as pretty. ![]() ![]() I have attempted to re-create my first impressions of the relevant events and personalities rather than present an assessment which takes into account the many facts I have learned since the structure was found. In chapter 6 we asserted that social media (along with cable television) amplifies moral outrage and fuels the "polarization cycle" that makes America's politics so bitter, and that has made political conflict on campus so much more intense since 2015. We cover additional research on this claim in section 1 below (and see also our page on Better Mental Health). In chapter 7 we asserted that social media is a likely contributor to the sudden rise in rates of anxiety, depression and self harm that hit Gen Z around 2012. In the book we noted two ways that social media contributes to the problems besetting Gen Z, universities, and many democracies. These harmful events are bad things, collectively, even if no single event is itself a bad thing. He argues that an adequate theory of harm should entail the counterfactual comparative account but also make room for a certain kind plural harm, where two or more events together harm an individual although neither one by itself is harmful. Feit provides detailed and thorough responses to the most challenging objections. ![]() The counterfactual comparative account is widely accepted but also widely criticized. On this account, in its most basic form, an act or event harms an individual provided that she would have been better off if it had not occurred. The most basic question is this: under what conditions does an event harm a given individual? Neil Feit focuses primarily on the metaphysics of harm, and he both defends and extends the counterfactual comparative account of harm. ![]() Bad Things addresses various philosophical questions about the nature and moral relevance of harm. ![]() ![]() ![]() This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
